Guy (Gaetano) Di Ponio
was born in 1948, in Cassino, in the province of Frosinone, Italy. His grandfather, Marco Di Ponio,
who had immigrated to USA in the early 1900s, was living in Cranbrook,
Michigan. Marco sponsored his son’s family, who arrived in
Windsor in 1950. Guy Di Ponio grew up on Erie Street, where his family
bought a house close to St. Angela Merici Church.
Di Ponio completed a Bachelors Degree in Economics (B.A.) from
the University of Windsor in 1973. He received his Master's Degree
in Business
Administration (M.B.A) in 1990. Guy received a diploma in Economic
Development from the University of Waterloo and graduated with
Honours in Industrial Engineering Technology from the Western Ontario
Institute of Technology.
Guy Di Ponio joined Valiant Machine and Tool Inc. in 1985, as the
Vice President, Sales and Marketing. Valiant is a diversified, high
technology capital equipment supplier to the automotive, aircraft,
chemical and office equipment industries. Based in Windsor, Ontario,
Valiant has over 500 employees and operates several plants in Canada
as well as a U.S. subsidiary in Troy, Michigan.
For a number of years prior to joining Valiant, Mr. Di Ponio was the
Development Commissioner for the Windsor Essex County Development Commission.
Mr. Di Ponio has represented his community throughout North America,
Europe and the Pacific Rim and was active in the City of Windsor’s
twinning arrangements with several European cities.
Guy Di Ponio has always been active in business and trade organizations
on both sides of the border and has been a member and director of many
associations, including The American Institute of Industrial Engineers,
The Ontario Industrial Development Council, The Economic Club of Detroit,
The Windsor Club, Windsor Chamber of Commerce, Mayor’s Twin City
Committee and the General Motors Supplier Council. His broad community
interests have earned him several awards, and much recognition. These
include Italian of the Year Award (1983), the 1989 International Ambassador
Award from C.B.D.A., in Detroit, Michigan and the Award of Excellence
in 2005 as the Professional Businessman of the Year.
Throughout his career, Mr. Di Ponio has maintained a strong interest
in academic affairs. He has served as a part time instructor at St.
Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology and has been a guest lecturer
at several Universities in Canada and U.S.A.
Guy Di Ponio and his wife Lucy live in Windsor and have four children.
To this day they maintain close links with the Detroit area through
family, friends and business associates. |
