  Medo Martinello was born in Windsor, Ontario. He attended Immaculate Conception school (Gr.1-5) and DeLaSalle (Gr.6-8). He played on city champions softball and basketball teams, and was a member of the Separate Schools All-Star hockey team in the annual Safety Patrol game vs. Public Schools. At Assumption High School, in Gr.10, he played on a WSSA & WOSSA championship hockey team. They were winners over London Beal Tech (2-0, 8-3) and Owen Sound C.V.I. (5-2) for WOSSA honours. He began his hockey referee career in 1953, in the outdoor Parks & Rec. League at Optimist and Lanspeary Parks.
