The invention of machines made the work easier and there was less necessity to decorate the material by hand. The knowledge to create handmade crafts became increasingly vase. The art of interlace was being forgotten.

Every country has its own tradition of handmade textiles. Italian homes are decorated with many handmade traditional textiles such as clothes, tablecloths, napkins, towels, pillows and tents. The textile is like a picture on which the craftsman shows his creativity and fantasy.

The first generation of Italians carried that tradition with them when they immigrated to Canada. They have saved their handmade carpets, tapestries and embroidered clothes as treasured memories of their Italian tradition. They conserved their tradition and have tried to pass that on to the next generations as well.
