J. Lyle Browning is an enterprising
individual with over fifty years of business experience. He began his
career at SKD Manufacturing Co Ltd. on Moy Avenue in Windsor. He excelled
at this automotive machine shop and stamping business and moved up
to becoming plant manager.
After seeing the new wonders of television Lyle worked with prominent
business people to help establish Windsor’s only television
manufacturing company. The company manufactured their own Coronet
brand sets. In 1950 he held the position of Vice President and Plant
manager for the operation. In 1952 he moved on to become the president
of CarSteel Manufacturing Co. in Lasalle.
Mr. Browning has been the owner of several businesses ventures.
He owned and operated Monitor Industries and Techno Tool & Die
until 1966. He was forced to take a break from the business world
due to a health crisis from 1966 to 1967. He later became the sales
manager of Centraline Manufacturing a position he held until 1971.
In 1971 he formed his own company J.L. Browning and Co. Ltd. Since
1979 Browning Engineering & Manufacturing Company, a division
of J. L. Browning Co. Ltd. has been serving the automotive industry
in Windsor. They are manufacturing Force Pressure Gauges and they
have an on site lab which ensures adherence to industry standards.
J Lyle Browning has achieve a series of ‘firsts’. He
was the first African Canadian student at Assumption College
in Windsor. He was the first Canadian of African descent to be
a Vice President
and General Manager of a large corporation in Canada. He has
encouraged many young people to become skilled tradespeople.
Now in his 82nd year Mr. Browning continues to be very active in
community service, advocacy and politics. (for more information please

engineer, a member of the Canadian Tooling Manufacturing Association
and a Senior Life Member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
He was appointed as a community representative to the Board and is
a member of the Precision Metal Cutting Advisory Committee at St.
Clair College.
On February 26, 2005 the Windsor and District Black Coalition hosted
a dinner in his honour with more than 200 guests in attendance. J.
Lyle Browning’s many accomplishment and contributions to the
community were recognized and he was presented with the 2005 Black
Community Leadership Award. |
